The kindergarten is located at the city limits where old farmland clashes with massive housing developments, and ancient, now dried out, river sleeves curve through the land, sheltering unique species of birds.

Pieces of the traditional agricultural pattern are taken apart and re-combined into a new patchwork which forms the backyard of the kindergarten. The patchwork is composed of orchards, fields, lawns and playgrounds, interacting with the building and allowing each classroom to have a different and personal view. The patchwork tries to create a continuity between the city and its edge.

As a second layer, river trees are superimposed to provide a local habitat for the large, sometimes migrating, birds of the nearby river arm. These trees provide dramatic changes in color throughout the year, and have patterned barks for the children to explore. The birds they invite might appear on a child's drawing.

The vegetation is chosen to offer the kindergarten children and teachers many dynamic and stimulating changes throughout each season and to provide all kinds of interesting materials, fruits and pods which can be used to support the craftwork that is a part of the kindergarten's curriculum.
